Scholarship Information

The NJTL of Trenton’s education scholarships are available for participants who have been active in the program for a minimum of two (2) years. Scholarships are offered through the USTA Foundation and the NJTL of Trenton.  Annually, the NJTL of Trenton offers a total of more than $20,000 in scholarship stipends to participants.

 

These scholarships are funded by:

• Charles Evans Scholarship Endowment
• Geisel Family Foundation


Applications are due to the NJTLT office by July 1 of each calendar year, and recipients will be notified early August to help prepare for the fall semester of school. If you have further questions, please contact:

Purpose

• To provide financial assistance for preparatory high school, trade school or college education to youth who have participated in the NJTL of Trenton program or who have been employed as program staff.
• To promote the importance of education in life goals and the linkage of education with sports.

Eligibility and Criteria

(In order to be eligible for a scholarship, ASHE students must fulfill the following requirements)

 

1.  Be an active ASHE Participant for a minimum of two (2) years:

  • Attend Ashe Practices Regularly

  • Attend Enrichment Programs Regularly

  • Complete a minimum of 16 volunteer hours each year

  • Implement a new initiative or activity that enhances the NJTL program

2.  Fill out and return scholarship application form before the deadline

3.  Write a short essay selecting one option based on your year in school. (*minimum 250 - 500 words 1-2 pages double spaced):

  • FIRST YEAR (rising) Describe what NJTL of Trenton has meant to you and how you would like to give back to NJTL of Trenton and/or the Trenton Community.

  • SOPHOMORE (rising) – Option 1: Have you found a new extra curricular activity/club that has encouraged you to get involved and give back? Option 2: Describe a challenge you have faced and how you overcame it?

  • JUNIOR (rising) – Option 1: Describe a challenge you have faced and how you overcame it. Option 2: Describe what internship opportunities you are seeking and how it will help in the pursuit of your career goals.

  • SENIOR (rising) – Option 1: Reflect on your freshman, sophomore, and junior years of college, then describe your proudest moment and what it took to achieve your goal. Option 2: Describe your plans after graduation and how this will further your career goals.

 

Upon receiving a scholarship you must:

1.  Submit a photo wear/holding your favorite college gear. (Example: hat, banner, t-shirt, sweatshirt, standing by the university mascot) ***If you previously submitted a photo you may skip***

2.  Volunteer a minimum of 3 hours:

  • Example 1: Assistant coach during two (2) Winter Ashe or Summer Ashe Tennis Practices

  • Example 2: Volunteer during one (1) full day of Summer Camp

  • Example 3: Attend a virtual Alumni Panel Discussion

3.  Submit Fall Semester transcript to NJTL of Trenton

4.  Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA

5.  Attend in-person or virtual check-in while on winter break during December or January before the Spring semester begins

 

Upon reviewing an application additional consideration will be awarded to:

  • Those active in the program for periods of time longer than the minimum requirement of two (2) years

  • Implement a new initiative or activity that enhances the NJTL program

  • Active participation entails:

  1. On the Court: Regular attendance at tennis practices, helping coaches with setup and/or breakdown of equipment or assisting coaches in teaching classes

  2. Off the Court: regular involvement in age-appropriate enrichment programs, volunteering at NJTL of Trenton special events such as the Annual Gala or Capital Cup
